I’ve always thought Shinagawa is an odd place – the station is big, and a little confusing, and it’s really just anchored by hotels. If you’re not there for a wedding, why are you there?
In this case we were planning to go to the aquarium, but being a cheap bastard in many ways I was put off by the entry price (plus the lateness of the hour, plus my general fatigue at the idea of lounging around looking at fish. Another time, OK? Maybe with discount tickets?).
And thus we ended up at this place serving aged sake, which seems to be an outlet of an online presence. It’s kinda neat that they serve you samples of sake in 5, 10 and 20-year old brackets. Old sake is spoiled, there’s no doubt about that, but if done right it spoils in an attractive way. If you know or like sherry or madeira, you’ve got a good idea what this tastes like, and of course the different ages are dramatically different. This is a cool novelty if you’re in the area, or else it does seem they do lots of mail order.
