Katayama, Kiyosumi Shirakawa (天ぷら 片山)

Today was the day of the big fish ‘n’ sake party, and I was out shopping. This is ont he way to the sake store, but the sake store was closed and I had already bought a bunch. My favorite rice store is right near the sake store – they always have at least half a dozen varieties of fancy brown rice. I favor Tsuyahime, having tried all of them.

Anyway, This place has been here forever, more or less, and I’ve always thought it looked good. I don’t have many opportunities to eat a little lunch like this in the neighborhood, and with all the cooking I did today I needed a break.

This is a relaxing place to have a quick lunch. Strangely, it was a bit crowded. I think of the corner where it sits as being pretty dead – midway between Monnaka and Kiyosumi Shirakawa, an odd angle, a taxi washing business. But there was a group of 4 when I arrived, and more came in after they left. It’s a pleasant husband and wife operation, very old.

You know, a couple years ago I had my only really great tenpura experience; the kakiage at the end of the meal was particularly incredible. This was less incredible, and was more heavy on the vegetables. That’s not a bad thing, but the fry was soft as well. At least there was a lot of sauce, and it was over quickly.

Plenty of work to do after as well.
