Los Jarritos, Newcastle DE

Delicious Mexican Cuisine! is what the web site promises. It’s not bad, but it’s also not a patch on the Crazy Mariachi in Hammonton. On the other hand, it’s a good place to stop while exploring the declasse delights of the Newcastle Fleamarket.

I really wonder how Mexican people feel when they see brightly colored serapes and spangled sombreros on the walls at a place like this. I’d like to think they feel embarassed and resentful that people think that summarizes or exmplifies their culture. On the other hand, Americans are pretty happy to be summed up with a flag display, aren’t we?

I’m not happy to be summed up with loaded nachos. I bet Mexican people have no idea what this is, like a big, thick 10-inch burrito. Bland.

So were the enchiladas. While the sauce was a bit lively, there wasn’t enough of it to enliven more than one tube. Damn. Someone left wondering what the fuss was about Mexican food, which means there’ll be more Mexican in our future.

And I’m certainly not limiting us to Rick Bayless outlets.
