Alpage, Kagurazaka

Have I mentioned this before? Along with Fermier (in Tokyu Food Show in Shibuya, or else the main store in Atago), these are the best cheese shops I know. (In a pinch, go to Cheese Kingdom in the basement of Matsuya Ginza, or Kita Senju or Tama Plaza or many points west. Or mail order.)

This is substantially the whole selection, but then it’s really all you need. They have a few types each of whatever you might be looking for – fresh, washed, blue, hard, sheep, goat, cow. A little selection of bio wines and ciders. Some preserves. Some pates.

The prices are at the expected levels for this stuff in Japan – between Y6k and Y15k per kilo (the latter for the truffle-infusion or aged parmesan); most top out at Y10k). The other distinguishing feature is the excrutiating slowness of the service. It’s not necessarily a problem, but it’s comical how long it takes them to disappear into the back to cut your slice of cheese.

This time, I took a little walk. It’s a nice neighborhood.
