I think most travel sites aren’t very helpful, but it’s pretty easy to upload a few pictures per temple. Consider these a teaser to help you decide where to go. Also, they’re all on the map (once I get the map fixed).
Fushimi Inari shrine is deeply quirky. Some time ago, somebody was really into foxes…and it just mushroomed from there. It’s definitely out of hand – it would take you 3 hours to walk all the paths, and that would be largely without going in to any of the many separate areas (see last picture) that are crammed higgledy-piggledy with small shrines to the honorable fox god.
Although with inari being the old god of fertility, rice and industry, and Fushimi being one of the main sake brewing cities of ancient Japan, it’s kinda easy to see where the money came from to build all this.
Fox sashimi, fox tempura, fox yakitori etc etc.
(all lovingly marinated in sake of course)
