I’m really unsure why we didn’t just eat inside the market rather than going to this place in the outer market where they pre-slice the fish and one of the chefs chuckled when we ordered inside-out salmon rolls. At least they’re open 24 hours and are pretty cheap. You can do better. 03-3549-1452

Misuji Ramen, Monzennakacho
Nights in Shinjuku require mornings of recovery and lunches of ramen… Misuji opened recently, more or less right across from the shrine entrance on Eitai Dori, the spiritual heart of Monzennakacho. This is where the lamb specialist used to be; I guess we all know how that worked out. Normal miso ramen. They do chicken […]
Otemachi Ramen, Otemachi (duh)
There is good news and bad news in today’s post. To the good, I have reconfirmed that, by bicycle, one can get practically anywhere on the east side of Tokyo in 20 minutes. Today I went from the office to Kappabashi (Christmas present shopping, I think you know what I mean), faffed around on the […]

Waffle Cafe Y, Asakusa
Waffles and wine, wine and waffles. Sign of the times – by day we serve waffles, at night we convert to a Spanish restaurant. Y has the advantage of being one of only a few restaurants just off the Kappabashi restaurant-supply strip, in addition to the obvious advantages of being new (18 months), pleasant and […]

Shunsaian, Otemachi (旬采庵)
While this was a truly dull lunch food-wise, I can think of a few positive things to say about this place: – It’s cheap. I mean, $7 lunch sets cheap. – It’s pretty cool that it’s mainly private rooms, so you can sit in horikotatsu and mellow out on your lunch hour. – The rice […]

Naruto Ramen, Kanda (七琉門)
I’m not a particularly diligent person. You scoff, but it’s true. Only for those brief periods when I’m really interested in something can I really apply myself to it. Right now it’s tsukemen. Which I don’t even like that much; I just want to understand why other people like them so much (I think they’re […]
Compound Cafe, Sangenjaya
Some cafes are so hip that you feel better just sitting in them. And some are so far beyond that, they just make you feel old. I felt old here, but in a weird inside-out sort of way since the interior was old too. In college, I had a house with 3 other guys. It […]

Hanezushi, Kanda (羽ずし)
Marketing themselves as a ‘sushi izakaya’, this place may meld the best of several money-making worlds. By limiting counter space (to about 4 seats) and focusing on tables (with about 150 seats), they can streamline production (I think the fish was pre-sliced), accept larger groups, and build a more festive (drunk) atmosphere. Good call, I […]

Green Phad Thai, Jinbocho
Recent comments have implied that I rarely venture out of the Otemachi Metro Area (or Mon-Naka, I suppose). Nothing could be further from the truth, but I do understand that interesting posts get lost in the daily crush of lunch options. Fortunately it will only be a few more weeks until the end of the […]

Rocky Top, Ginza
Japan is a strange and wonderful place. Hidden subcultures about – usually these only peek out for a moment when some intrepid foreign journalist comes to town and writes a story about a colorful character in one of them. You read it, you think it’s interesting, and you forget about it. I started playing music […]
