Recognize this place? That’s right, it’s the old-fashioned standing ramen in the restaurant row on the outside of Tsukiji Market that always has the long lines. Over the course of our visits to the market, someone has gotten increasingly vocal about trying it…and realistically, I don’t need a lot of convincing, do I? Do you […]

Fukuchan Ramen, Tsukiji
Fuku-chaaaaaan! Over the summer I started running more seriously again (I think I can now declare that I’ve stopped again; it’s been weeks. My knees almost feel normal.). While doing my Tsukiji route, I would go past Fukuchan, across Harumi Dori from the Tsukiji market. I was running at night, and the huge red neon […]

Hanafusa, Tsukiji (はなふさ)
Try walking, or jogging, or cycling around this quiet part of Tsukiji – 7-chome, across Harumi Dori from the side entrance to the fish market. You’ll be struck by how old it is, with a village feel on the minor shopping street and a few dark alleys parallelling that. Each has a couple quaint old […]

Nekoya, Tsukiji (ねこ屋)
How would you come up with this concept? “Stylish, private basement izakaya with homey food served by a youngish female master in kimono, with an outstanding sake selection. And everything cat-themed.” Everything. Well, it’s a good place, and the Woodsman deserves all credit for coming up with it when the rough plan was an evening around Tsukiji. Neko-san […]

Hokuto Ramen, Tsukiji (北都)
Went to Tsukiji today, to make a new friend…hi! I’ll give you a little pointer for free – go after lunch on Saturday, before the shops close, and blocks of tuna like this will be half-price. This ended up being the same price as a watery-looking specimen half the size in the grocery store. You […]
Itadori, Tsukiji (築地虎杖)
Tourists are always writing about how the fish they ate at a little restaurant in the inner or outer market of Tsukiji was the best possible fish EVER (especially if they waited 2 hours to eat at Daiwa). I don’t think that’s really true; whatever fish is identified as the best is almost certainly going […]

Tsukiji
Have I mentioned before that the outer market at Tsukiji is fun? I mean, the fish parts are cool and all, but the market part is great. It’s like an open-air market in southeast Asia, but with higher quality stuff, more variety, and hygiene. Fresh wasabi, in quantity, at low prices. Can’t beat the fresh […]

Sushi Ichiban, Tsukiji
I’m really unsure why we didn’t just eat inside the market rather than going to this place in the outer market where they pre-slice the fish and one of the chefs chuckled when we ordered inside-out salmon rolls. At least they’re open 24 hours and are pretty cheap. You can do better. 03-3549-1452
